In Shakespeare’s Midsummer
Night’s Dream, The faery King (Oberon) and Queen (Titania)
are fighting, which is causing terrible disruption in the
mortal world. Oberon, in order to get his way, enchants
Queen Titania, causing her to fall in love with the first
creature she sees, which he makes sure, is a village
simpleton whose head has been turned into that of an ass
(Bottom) In all of this he is aided and abetted by his
servant, the mischievous sprite Puck, who spies for him to
make sure that all is going well with his nefarious plan.
Once he has achieved his ends, he lifts the enchantment
from Titania, who forgives him and returns to him (thus
exchanging one ass for another!) |
